Swiss faucet expertise since 1854

Every future has a past. Volumes could be written about the past of Similor AG and ist brand names which had their beginnings alongside Lage Geneva in 1854. The most important stages and key facts in the history of this renowned Swiss company can all be found here.

Similor AG’s history began in 1846 when very few Swiss homes had running water, let alone a bathroom. That year Henri Jean Charles Kugler opened a small foundry in Lausanne where he produced brass products, oil and petroleum lamps.

In 1854, at the age of 32, he officially established the Kugler company, and thus laid the foundation stone for a unique story in Swiss corporate history.

2017

Similor AG records its 100th anniversary.

2016

Similor is extending its Simibox collection with two further flush-mounted boxes: Simibox 1-Point and Simibox 2-Point. The new boxes are amongst the most compact on the market and can be used in combination with washbasin and shower mixers.

The redesign of arwa-quadriga wins a Red Dot Award 2016.

2014

Similor, Switzerland’s first faucet manufacturer, celebrates its 160th anniversary.

Curvetronic wins an IF Award 2014 and a Red Dot Award 2014.

2013

Revolutionary, integrated bathroom concept “Kartell by Laufen” is created under the project management of Italian designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and in cooperation with Kartell, LAUFEN and Similor.

The design of the new washbasin mixers arwa-cityplus and arwa-cityplus zero is lauded in professional circles and wins the red dot design award.

2010

Faucets with LED technology take the market by storm. The new arwa-lb lumitouch wins the red dot design award. 

Simibox, the new standard built-in unit, simplifies everyday work for plumbers.

2009

Merger of Similor SA, arwa AG and Sanimatic AG. Similor AG is founded with new headquarters sited in Laufen BL. Building of the new factory in Laufen.

2008

arwa-twinflex, the sink faucet with the flexible outlet, is awarded the prestigious “red dot design award – best of the best”, having won the GOOD DESIGN Award a year earlier.

2007

Similor joins the global player Roca Group.

2003

Similor acquires arwa AG.

1997

Similor achieves a high point in faucet manufacture with its development of the Ecototal and Ecototal+ cartridges, launched in 1997 and 2003 respectively. Their hot water and volume restraint reduces water and energy consumption by up to 30%. The added benefit of Ecototal+ is that the lever is set to cold in its home position, so that no hot water or energy is wasted unintentionally.

Similor acquires Sanimatic AG.

Similor acquires Kugler Robinetterie SA.

1990

Foundation of Sanimatic AG in Geroldswil.

1989

The new Milor range is an instant hit: its “Vario Decor“ offers an impressive variety of combination options.

1984

arwa launches the arwa-twin line, with impressive functional design and innovative technology.

1976

The first mechanical mixer, arwa-trend, is launched.

1975

Kugler is given the “Golden Laurel” award for quality and technology.

1974

The new Sahara range handle is presented in public for the first time and is soon to be copied several times.

1955

Foundation of the Armaturenfabrik Wallisellen AG (2003 divestment and founding of arwa AG). 

1954

Similor launches an innovation in the shape of the plastic handles on the new Silor faucet line, which is introduced in Europe soon after.

With an intuitive feel for future developments, exclusive rights to the Simix system are acquired in the automatic mixer sector.

1947

Kugler also nurtures an innovation and launches the first mixer by the name of Kuglostat on the market, which is soon to be followed by the Kuglopress system.

Aesthetic beauty takes centre stage after the rigours of the war years. Similor captures the spirit of the times and designs the Silux range. A quality faucet that impresses with its harmonious lines and three or four-arm handles.

1932

Kugler opens a branch in Zurich. This helps the company to achieve a greater level of awareness in German-speaking Switzerland and Tessin.

1930

Despite a series of extensions the Coulouvrenière factory premises are still too small. Charles Kugler, the oldest son of Jean Kugler, builds a large modern factory in the Geneva district of La Jonction. From this point onwards, precious chrome steel establishes itself in the manufacture of faucets.

Formation of Similor SA in Carouge.

1911

Jean Kugler extends the faucet factory premises.

1896

Kugler is awarded two gold medals at the 2nd Swiss National Exhibition in Geneva.

1890

The general introduction of domestic water supply systems in Switzerland gives the plumbing and faucet industry a new lease of life. Jean Kugler, son and successor of the company founder Charles Kugler, sets up new workshops.

1883

The jury of the 1st Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich awards Kugler with a silver medal.

1863

Kugler moves to Geneva and settles in the Coulouvrenière district in 1870. Kugler is the first company in Switzerland to produce water and gas faucets.

1857

Kugler is awarded a bronze medal at the 3rd Swiss Industrial Exhibition in Bern.

1854

After founding a casting workshop for brass products (incl. oil and petroleum lamps) in Lausanne in 1846, Charles Kugler establishes the Kugler company aged 32.
